The gypsy head of DATA windlasses is equipped with a clutch and a band brake to allow independent operation from the drum. The chain can be lowered by loosening the brake bands; engagement of the gypsy head is via a clutch. Models with an electric motor are equipped with a torque-limiting coupling for overload protection.
